Autrefois nommée collégiale St Matthieu, elle a été construite de 1440 à 1486 sur l'ordre de William Sinclair, troisième et dernier prince St Clair d'Orkney en style gothique. Seul le chœur en fut achevé après la mort de son commanditaire.
Son décor extrêmement riche fait bien sûr appel au christianisme mais aussi aux mythologies nordiques.
