Most of the churches in Moscow were built to celebrate military victories. This one was originally built to thank God for the defeat of Napoleon. But Stalin had the cathedral blown up, and after a year of debris removal, the site became a public swimming pool. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the Russians rebuilt the cathedral as you see it now.
