Le manoir date des débuts du XIVe siècle, il a été transformé au XVe (ajout de la porte d'entrée) et au XVIIe (chapelle) et c'est l'une des demeures de cette époque les mieux conservées d'Angleterre.
Il a longtemps appartenu aux Selby (1591-1889) puis aux Colyer-Fergussons (1889-1951). Racheté en 1953 par Charles Henry Robinson, un riche américain, il a été entièrement restauré et remeublé et légué en 1985 au National Trust qui l'administre maintenant.
