【国指定重要文化財】…指定名称は「旧江戸城 外桜田門」…内側の渡櫓門(わたりやぐらもん)と外側の高麗門(こうらいもん)の二重構造。

江戸城(現皇居)の内堀に造られた門の一つで、国の重要文化財。第一と第二の門との間に桝形の四角い広場がある桝形門としては、現存する中で最大規模。小田原街道の始点にあたり、かつては小田原口とも呼ばれた。寛永13(1636)年に修築され、大正12(1923)年の関東大震災で破損した際、鉄網土蔵造りに改修される。 安政7(1860)年に大老井伊直弼が水戸浪士らに殺害された「桜田門外の変」で知られる。
