There are a couple of stairs in the corner with the word Sapporo on them, where you can get a great photo of the clock tower.

This clock tower is originally the Embu-jo (drill hall) of the Sapporo Agricultural College (now Hokkaido University). Built in 1878.

現在の時計台は札幌の街中にあり周辺は高層ビル群が立ち並ぶ場所であるため、「日本三大がっかり名所」と呼ばれることもあるが、建物は日本最古の時計台として重要文化財の指定を受けている。時計台の鐘として高階哲夫が曲を付けたり、STVラジオでは一部時間帯の時報に時計台の鐘の音、札幌市のカントリーサイン、市民憲章をはじめ札幌のイメージとして広く使用され北海道を象徴する建造物の一つ。

北海道を代表する観光スポットの一つで札幌のシンボル。正称は旧札幌農学校演武場。クラーク博士が構想、2代目教頭であるW.ホイーラーが設計を担当し、明治11年 (1878年) 札幌農学校 (現北海道大学) の演武場として開校。1881年 (明治14年) 5月頃に時計塔の設置工事に着手、7月頃に完成、1906年 (明治34年) 現在地に移転、この頃から演舞場は「時計台」と呼ばれるようになったとされる。
